The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement, claiming the two companies used millions of NYT articles to train their large language models which now “directly compete” with the New York Times. When asked about current events, the New York Times alleges that ChatGPT will sometimes generate word-for-word excerpts of its articles that lie behind a paywall.
Online anonymity is dying in China. While China already requires frequent identity verification to use the internet, in April last year, Chinese social media companies began requiring all users to disclose their location using their IP address. Chinese platforms went a step further in October by requiring accounts with more than 500k followers to publicly disclose their real identities, and many are now worried that this rule will be extended to all online accounts.
U.S. and Mexican officials have agreed to work together more closely to tackle record migration at the Southern border. Talks occurred shortly after the U.S. temporarily closed parts of the border to redeploy enforcement agents, which resulted in a slowdown in trade.
